The Owlets’ theme for the month of April is ‘Science and Springtime.’ They have started doing some science experiments and spring activities at home.

Their first week has already started with some chemical reactions by mixing vinegar and baking soda together.

Another Owlet friend had fun taking the experiment in another direction. She had fun mixing colors together and seeing what colors you get when you do.

The Owlets also did a static electricity butterfly. This was where they made a butterfly from a construction paper body that was glued to a piece of cardboard, but the tissue paper wings were not glued down. Then they took a balloon and rubbed it in their hair to the static electricity which made the wings move them up and down like it was flying because the balloon got a static charge. From the static charge the negatively charged balloon was able to move the positively charged tissue paper wings to fly. One of our friends didn’t have balloons, but they still found other things to use to move the butterfly wings, like this comb to get the same results and static charge.

The weeks to come, the Owlets will have more fun with science experiments and springtime fun like this spring egg wreath.

January was a toot! The Owlets had fun learning about transportation. They first were asked what they thought transportation meant and some of the responses were:

“Going to school.” – Adeline

“Playing” – Alice

“Airplanes” – Parker

After they all said what they thought it meant, Miss Amanda explained that transportation is something that takes you from one place to another place, like a car, truck, airplane, bike, and so on. They then talked about transportation and learned some fun facts. For example, the first flight was by Orville Wright 117 years ago and he flew for a whole 12 seconds! The children read many fun books about transportation like, Old MacDonald Had A Boat, I Wish I Were A Pilot, and many more. The Owlets, of course, did lots of fun projects as well. They made different modes of transportation, they made a shape helicopter, and they got to paint with cars.

The Owlets had so much bringing their own bikes or scooters to school one day. They got to ride them around the yard and even on the sports court.

Before they rode their bike or scooter, the children got to ride the Saklan school bus! It was very nice of Mr. Chuck to take the Owlets for a ride around the block. It was so much fun!

To get into to the fall spirit, the Owlets carved their class pumpkin. First, they did their five senses with it. They told Mrs. Amanda what the pumpkin smelled like, what it felt like, what it tasted like, what it sounded like, and what it looked like. They guessed how many seeds could be in the pumpkin. Then, they washed the seeds and roasted them. When Mrs. Amanda asked if they liked pumpkin seeds or not, the majority of the children answered yes. It was a lot of fun!

Owlets had an amazing Halloween party and pumpkin hunt on the 30th of November. It was very cute to see the children hunt for their pumpkins and get excited when they found theirs. Halloween was a blast. It was a lot of fun for the children to parade through the school and attend Flag in their Halloween costumes.

For the month of September, the Owlets have been learning about community helpers.

Last week, the children had a guest expert, Officer Baiza come in and talk to them about being a CHP Officer. He showed the Owlets his cool CHP truck, what he had inside his truck, and they even got to pretend to drive it. It was a lot of fun.

Then on Friday, the Owlets visited the Moraga Gardens Farm. The children saw what farmers and gardeners do, and what it takes to run a garden or farm. The Avant family even let the Owlets eat lunch in their backyard, play with their toys, and meet their chickens. It was another fun day!

We are so happy to have welcomed 17 new Owlet friends this 2019/2020 school year! They have transitioned very well and love making new friends. The Owlets also enjoy music class with Ms. Chaffey, P.E. with Mr. Crabtree, Spanish with Maestra Ester, art activities, outside time, and inside activities.

It has felt to Ms. Amanda and Ms. Erin that these new Owlet friends have been in school for 6 months, not 2 weeks. We are so excited for a wonderful school year and watch these sweet Owlets blossom!
