The Saklan Suns rise again! Last night, the Suns played The Berkeley School in basketball.  Two games were played; varsity and junior varsity. The Berkeley School won the first game 48 to 34, and the Suns turned it around the second game with a 22 to 12 victory. Overall, the experience was positive and fun.

Frank Stella Class Project

Based on Frank Stella’s Shoubeegi 3D painting (at SFMOMA), the 2nd grade started with cutting out organic shapes and painting in layers on cardboard.

Here they are gluing together their final compositions.

Species Interactions

The sixth grade, as part of their ecology unit, have been looking at species interactions. To do this, they had to portray with a partner the relationship of two organisms found in nature, take pictures of the portrayal, and then make a comic strip with them. They used their laptops to create these impressive comics! Come check out more of them in the science lab!

7th Grade is Getting Ready for Hawaii

In preparation for the 7th grade Science and Humanities Hawaiian field trip, Miss Parks asked her students to use a vintage Hawaiian postcard from the 1920s and 30s. The students were supposed to use their Hawaiian history knowledge to interpret the design and purpose of the postcard. Some of the topics featured were: Pan American World Airways, Libby’s Pineapple Company, and artist Frank Warren. This assignment helps the students have a deeper understanding of the culture of the Hawaiian islands.

Robotics Enrichment at Saklan

This fall, Ms. O and a group of 10 curious students embarked on a mission to build, program, and battle Sumo Robots. The students learned about motherboards, their components, and soldered needed parts such as: motors, battery packs, and sensors.  After the building process, students learned how to program lights, sensors, motors, and then we battled our robots! Their task was to move around the ring and once they sensed another robot, they were to attack and push that robot out of the ring. Or if they came too close to the edge of the ring, they were to abort and move away from the edge to start searching again.

This was as much of a learning process for the kids as it was for myself. The students have an intro to building, soldering and coding, which can help them continue trying to program their robots. It was a fun enrichment class which we hope to do again next fall!

Sixth Grade Science: Volcanoes

20161108_092444

Students in 6th grade are ending their volcano unit. They learned about different types of volcanoes due to lava flow, where volcanoes occur on our planet, and the different types of rock that can form.

Students also made their own volcano, which they experimented with thin and thick “lava” to see how fast it can move and what type of rock might occur from that type of eruption.
