Head’s Corner

Dear Saklan Parents,

Next week we will have our annual Town Hall meeting.  This will be an opportunity for our community to reflect on the results of the last year and hear about plans for the future.  During this meeting we will be recognizing our faculty members who have arrived at 5, 10 and 15 years of service to the school.  It will also be an opportunity to hear from our Board of Trustees and engage in a conversation on the direction of the school in the years ahead. The Town Hall will be held on Friday, January 26th at the Willow Spring church.  The program starts at 9:00 am and will run about one hour.

On Wednesday, January 31st will have our Moving-Up Day for students in Pre-school and Lower School.  With the re-enrollment season ahead of us, students will have a chance to meet their future teachers, see the next classroom and get a taste of what it will be like at the next grade level.   At the end of January we will be sending out re-enrollment contracts.   We have again built in an early enrollment discount, which effectively keeps the tuition at this year’s level.  We are very eager to have all of our students back again next year, and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about our programs.  Please share your experiences with your friends and neighbors who might be looking for an outstanding school with a supportive community.  While we have been stepping up our marketing every year, your referrals are still out biggest promotional tool. So please continue to spread the word about Saklan.

Thank you to Kim Manning for running the day-long Uniform Boutique today. As I mentioned at Flag, all items are free which made it the ultimate shopping experience!  Also remember that with the cold weather, we have decided to put no restrictions on outerwear.  However, once in the classrooms, all students must adhere to the uniform code.

Have a great weekend!

Peter

On our way to 100% Participation!

hands

Did you know that foundations and corporations view high participation rates as an indicator of a school’s strength and health?  It’s true!  Your gift is seen as a vote of confidence in our students, teachers, programs and mission. Saklan is a school that others want to financially support, too.

Our goal is to reach 100% participation in our Annual Giving Fund from parents, trustees, faculty and staff. To date, our Board of Trustees and all of our teachers and staff have donated and pledged—leading the way at 100% participation in our Annual Giving Fund.  Yay!

Currently, our parents are participating at 56%. Well on their way to 100!

Here’s the breakdown by class:
  3rd Grade  =  57%
Owlets  =  42% 4th Grade  =  58%
Hoot Owls  =  47% 5th Grade  =  58%
Kindergarten  =  50% 6th Grade  =  83%
1st Grade  =  40% 7th Grade  =  56%
2nd Grade =  64% 8th Grade  =  50%

Parents, if you haven’t already, you will be receiving a phone call from the school in the coming days. Pick up the call! We’re excited to hear from you!

Please donate/pledge today and reach 100% participation by tomorrow!

Fun Fridays in February!

DSC_2239

Saklan’s Student Council has planned lots of fun and games on the last three Fridays in February!  They have chosen a different theme for each of these Fridays.  Please have your child dress in clothes that relate to the specified theme.  At lunchtime each day, the Student Council officers will play a cooperative game with the elementary and middle school students to boost school spirit and to encourage teamwork.  Please refer to the list below for days and themes, and please remember that your outfits must be school and weather appropriate!

Friday, February 9th-Hawaiian Day

Students are encouraged to wear clothes that are in a Hawaiian theme. During lunchtime, student will be participating in a water balloon toss contest.

Friday, February 16th- Class Theme Day

Each grade level will choose a class theme so all students can match and build team spirit. We will have a 3-legged race for grade level pairs to participate in during the lunch hour.

Friday, February 23rd-Pajama Day

This is a Saklan favorite!  Kids should wear their favorite pajamas and appropriate slippers to school.  At lunch, the students can participate in a donut-eating contest

We hope you join in the fun!

Worm’s Eye View Snowman

Group

During our first week back from break, the third graders created Snowman pictures inspired by a book we read: “Snowmen at Night.” We made our pictures from the perspective of a “worm’s eye view” and used chalk pastels to add shading and dimension. Come by our classroom to check out their masterpieces!

Building Our Future Together

Saklan families are asked to make a donation or pledge to the Annual Fund. These gifts ensure the continued health, success, and growth of our school.

While tuition establishes the foundation for building bright futures of our children, it does not cover the full cost of a Saklan education. A contribution to the Annual Fund benefits each and every student at Saklan, bridging “the gap” between the actual cost to educate each student and what families pay in tuition.

We encourage you to consider the impact your gift will make, to realize the value of your donation in providing an exceptional school experience for our students, and to make your gift a personally meaningful one while fully understanding the significance of our budget gap.

We have 10 more days of the active period of the Annual Giving Fund, which will end on January 22.

These are the ways you can support Saklan:

  • To donate online, please click HERE.
  • Giving by check? Please mail in or drop off at the office.
  • To pledge NOW and pay by May 15, 2018: Please email your commitment amount to development@saklan.org
  • Want to discuss your gift further? Please contact our Director of Development, Carol Goldman, at cgoldman@saklan.org

Thank you very much!

Summer@Saklan Pre-Registration

IMG_7222

In the last four years our Summer@Saklan Program, with a focus on learning, language and laughter, has grown by 165%.  Last year the sessions filled up very quickly and some Saklan School families were not able to get a spot. We anticipate that the demand for the program will be even greater this summer, and thus we have decided to offer you a pre-registration option so that you can lock in a place for your child before the registration opens to the public on January 16th.

The Summer@Saklan Program offers three 3-week long sessions with students divided into Mini-campers (ages 3-5) and Explorers (ages 6-11).   Costs for each session are: Mini-campers  $1100 ($800 half day), Explorers $1300 ($950 half-day).

To secure your spot before the registration opens, please fill in and return a pre-registration form together with a deposit of $100 per child by Friday, January 12th.  These forms are being sent home today with all students in PreK-Grade 5 and are also available at the school office and on Renweb.

The schedule and structure of the sessions is as follows:
