PA Educational Series: The Saklan Academic Edge

curr3

Friday, September 15th, 9AM @ Saklan Library

Saklan provides our children with many advantages from well-rounded curriculum, small class sizes, to hands-on learning and leadership experiences. This PA Educational Series will focus on The Saklan School’s academic edge and how the curriculum positively impacts students of all ages to better ready them to pursue their passions.

Saklan science teacher Vickie Obenchain and Curriculum Director/Middle School Dean Kim Parks will lead a discussion on new STEM programs, new curriculum investments, academic goals, professional development to support new levels of academics rigor, and why Saklan’s academic edge is truly unique.

Please RSVP: https://saklan.eventbrite.com

For questions, please contact Sandy Lo: sandralo@gmail.com

“Saklan’s unique touch comes from our students love of learning and their inquisitive nature. Luckily our curriculum/school leadership allows us to focus on the interest of our students, to help in driving their love of learning further.” – Ms. O

Moraga Pear & Wine Festival

Once again, we will have a booth at the Moraga Pear & Wine Festival. The event takes place in the Moraga Commons Park on Saturday, September 23 from 11:00 – 4:00.

This year, there’s something new and we’ll be a part of it! “Moraga Gets Chalked” is being sponsored by the Moraga Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Moraga’s Art in Public Spaces Committee. The goal is to draw a magical place including one of the sculptures from town. There is a writing component as well. Our fearless Art Teacher, Ms. Natalie Palms, will be coordinating our team. The Chalk Contest will be held on the basketball court. Artists begin at 11:00 and end at 2:00.  Please stop by our booth and cheer on our artists!

If your middle schooler would like to earn community service hours assisting with our booth, please have them contact our Director of Marketing, Christine Kuckuk at marketing@saklan.org.

Head’s Corner

Dear Saklan Community,

Today marks the end of our first full week of regular classes, and I have been very pleased to see how easily our students have gotten back into the routine of school and how quickly our academic program has gotten into gear. At Flag today, Saklan received a Wastebusters 75% Plus Award from the Central Contra Costa Waste Authority for our recycling efforts during the last school year. Under the leadership of our Science teacher, Vickie Obenchain, our entire faculty, staff and student body made a concerted school-wide effort to reduce waste and recycle, and in fact we achieved a recycling rate of 83%.  I was informed that only one school in Contra Costa surpassed us with 86%, so we now have a new goal for this year.

The presentation of the Wastebusters Award was made by Roger Wykle of the Moraga Town Council. In addition to a nice plaque that will be displayed in the school office, we received a check for $1,500. A big thank you and congratulations to Vickie Obenchain, who is the driver behind our recycling program, as well as all of our faculty, staff and students for an outstanding community effort to address this important issue and demonstrate our mindfulness to the environment.

I would also like extend a big thank you to Kim Manning for again running the school uniform exchange. It was nice to see so many parents walk away from our BBQ with articles from the exchange, which are totally free. I have been very pleased with the excellent degree of adherence to the school’s dress policy. For your reference, this policy is articulated in the Parent Handbook which is available on Renweb, where you will also find the school directory. Please contact the office if you have not been able to log into Renweb, and please do not use the information in Renweb for any commercial purposes.

I look forward to seeing all of the PreK and Lower School parents at our Back to School Night on September 7.

Have a great long weekend!

Newton’s Revenge Roller Coaster Problem

In Algebra I, 8th graders reviewed correlation, scatter plots and trend lines by solving a fun problem about roller coaster safety. They measured their heights and compared to their reach. They also compared it to the smallest student at Saklan. They noticed a strong correlation between a person’s height and reach no matter how tall they were.

Come to flag next Friday to learn more, and see our data and graph.

Thank you Owlets for helping us solve this problem!

Hopscotch

One week left to sign-up for the 2nd Annual Back to School Hopscotch Tournament. So far there are 40 competitors! The competition is for students 1st– 8th grades and faculty.  Bouts will commence September 11 during recess and lunch, and will continue as a single elimination tournament in the weeks following until there is a champion. Get your markers ready and start hopping!

Keeping cool in the shade

The weather still feels like summer! The dog days of August are upon us; luckily The Saklan School has plenty of shade to stay cool. During these few HOT weeks, we will be exploring the rest, relaxation, and recovery phase of physical education. So far this year, the students have had some fun with our new parachute. Water bottles encouraged!
