Summer@Saklan Pre-Registration

IMG_7222

In the last four years our Summer@Saklan Program, with a focus on learning, language and laughter, has grown by 165%.  Last year the sessions filled up very quickly and some Saklan School families were not able to get a spot. We anticipate that the demand for the program will be even greater this summer, and thus we have decided to offer you a pre-registration option so that you can lock in a place for your child before the registration opens to the public on January 16th.

The Summer@Saklan Program offers three 3-week long sessions with students divided into Mini-campers (ages 3-5) and Explorers (ages 6-11).   Costs for each session are: Mini-campers  $1100 ($800 half day), Explorers $1300 ($950 half-day).

To secure your spot before the registration opens, please fill in and return a pre-registration form together with a deposit of $100 per child by Friday, January 12th.  These forms are being sent home today with all students in PreK-Grade 5 and are also available at the school office and on Renweb.

The schedule and structure of the sessions is as follows:

Session/Dates                  Mini Campers                  Explorers

S1/June 11- 29                   Spanish                               Spanish/Mandarin /Italian

Annual Giving Fund

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Every year, each member of Saklan’s community—families, faculty, and friends—is asked to make a donation to our Annual Giving Fund.  The Annual Giving Fund helps Saklan meet its budgeted needs during the current school year and provide a vibrant place for children to learn and develop.

“Thank you” to our parents, grandparents, teachers and staff, current and former trustees who have donated and pledged to our Annual Giving Fund to date.  We are truly grateful.

We will be finishing our public appeal for this fundraising campaign on Monday, January 22. This means that there are only 2 ½ more weeks remaining to send in your gifts and pledges.

  • Please consider making Saklan your family’s priority for charitable giving. You can donate online by clicking HERE.
  • If you would like to pledge now and pay later, by May 15, 2018, please email your pledge to development@saklan.org
  • Many answers about your Annual Giving Fund gift can be found HERE.
  • If not, then please contact our Director of Development, Carol Goldman, at development@saklan.org

Dear Saklan Community,

Today is the last day before our Winter Break and it’s hard to believe that the year has come to an end. The final act of 2017 has been the superlative rendition of ‘The Lion King KIDS’ by our Grades 3 to 5 students this morning. Thank you once again to Mrs. Chaffey, and all the teachers and staff that helped create this remarkable showing of student creativity and talent.  Ending our year with such a showing of passion and enthusiasm is a fitting way to sum up the Saklan experience and underscore or mission of thinking creatively, acting compassionately and living courageously.

Right now the students are getting their bags ready to depart for the holiday break. I think you’ll agree, this has been a very successful year for Saklan.  Our students have excelled in every way. From Pre-K to Grade 8, each student has tried their best and has moved a little closer to reaching their full potential. We are very proud of them all.

Our Saklan faculty and staff have also outdone themselves in their energy and commitment to making 2017 a year of bountiful learning and personal growth.  Offering our students unforgettable experiences like today’s presentation of the Lion King or the recently completed Washington, D.C. trip are prime examples of this.

I’d like to thank each of you for your contribution to our community. It’s the people of Saklan that make it such a special place and I appreciate your support and positive energy.  I hope you and your family enjoy a wonderful break together and I wish you many blessings in the coming New Year.

Have a great holiday!

Peter

What is Your Heritage

These last two months have been very special in second grade. We have been working on our Family Heritage Unit. The second graders and their parents have completed several projects:  a family tree and discovering where their ancestors came from, making a paper quilt square telling about their family, finding out the origin of their first and middle names, and interviewing a grandparent about what life was like when they were young. In class the children read many stories about families from other countries.

They made passports and wrote Immigrant Kid stories pretending they were coming to America in the early 1900’s. They also read the book Molly’s Pilgrim and created a clothespin ancestor doll. One of the final activities was to bring in a memory box filled with personal items, but not revealing their identity. There was a lot of excitement trying to guess the owner of each memory box. It has been so fun sharing all our family heritage stories with each other.

News from the Sports Court

Last week we held our 2nd annual Lunch Time Hula Hoop Contest.  Sixteen competitors started at the beginning of lunch and fifteen minutes later there were only two left.  They held a tie breaker with two hoops each.  Five minutes later Jack D.(1st) was champion!

Our intramural sports will continue in January with a school wide soccer tournament.  Also in 2018 we start our busy interscholastic sports season against other schools.  A soccer game is in the works along with a full schedule of basketball games.  During the spring we will play volleyball.  All fifth through eighth graders are eligible to participate.  More information will also be sent out regarding the schedules.  If you are interested in participating or helping out in any way please contact Mr. Crabtree at ccrabtree@saklan.org.  Thank you.

Owlets’ Multicultural Celebration

IMG_2204

On Thursday the Owlets and their families came together to celebrate the holidays. Each family shared a favorite, traditional food that represents their cultural background. The kids were busy eating and talking and trying new foods. It was a beautiful way to end the year spending time together!

Invention Exploratorium

The first grade class learned about simple machines.  They each invented their own machine and then created those machines using various scraps of recycled materials.  During their presentation, they had to explain how this invention would work and why it was helpful.  Great job first grade!

The Cold Weather Has Arrived

Temperatures have been very low in the mornings this past week, so we advise parents to dress their children appropriately for outdoor recess. With this need to keep our students warm, we remind parents to adhere to the school’s dress code. The following new hooded sweat jacket would be a great addition to any Saklan student’s wardrobe.
