In the Art Room – Make a Wish!

Lilly wishes for better ways to treat mental illnesses.
Aaron wishes his cat was still alive.
Isabel wishes her dog would never pass but at the same time be healthy.

At the beginning of every year, K- 8th grades participates in a group installation project. Last week, colorful pieces of paper were hanging from the walkway. Thinking globally and locally, the students have made a wish for the new school year.

Elena and Elishka wish for world peace and eternal happiness. Phoebe wishes to control water and be on Broadway!

This project was inspired by Japanese Artist Yoko Ono who has made wishing trees around the world. This year is off to a great start with all the positive wishes made!

5th Grade Makes Piñatas

This week, the 5th graders worked on their final project of the year in Maestra Padilla’s Spanish class.

The students made piñatas using balloons and paper mache. The process involved blowing up a balloon to the desired size, cutting up paper, and then using a mixture of flour and water to dip the pieces of paper in the concoction and wrap them around the balloon. They learnt that it’s important to put several layers of paper strips so that when the piñata dries it will be sturdy and not fall apart.

The students enjoyed this fun cultural project. They will take their piñatas home on the last day of class.

8th Grade Roller Coaster Project

The 8th graders culminating physics project was to design and create a roller coaster for a marble. This roller coaster utilized the 4 forces we learned about in class, had enough momentum to fulfill a loop, and had a slow down stop. Each group used their creativity, math skills and the scientific method to design, redesign, start over, and eventually create their coasters.

I am extremely impressed with their designs and their efforts in this project. They are a great class and glad to see they are ready for high school!

Spring Arts Festival

The Art Festival was an absolute blast! The students were so proud to showcase the artwork they worked so hard on. Each student displayed 4-5 projects made throughout the year. During school hours, K-8th participated in a scavenger hunt to find the answers within the artwork. The winners were announced at Friday Flag this morning!

Moraga Rotary Field Day

On Wednesday, May 9th, The Saklan School sent seventeen athletes to the annual Moraga Rotary Field Day. This is always a huge event with all the third, fourth, and fifth graders in Moraga competing in six different events. We had two medalists this year. Sadie in third grade won bronze in the super sack race, and Sammy in third grade won the gold in the spectacular soft ball throw.

Practica tu Vocabulario

In Spanish class, students really enjoy using Quizlet. This web-based application has several study methods to learn new vocabulary at school or home. At school, they enjoy using Quizlet-live in which the teacher breaks their class up into teams. The teacher chooses whether to start with a definition or term. Then each team will have to choose the correct term or definition to win. The team with the most points wins!

Miss O in Senegal

Our Science Teacher, Miss Vickie Obenchain, arrived safely in Dakar, Senegal on Tuesday evening. As we mentioned earlier this year, she was selected for the 2017-18 Teachers for Global Classrooms Fellowship sponsored by the US Department of State, Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs. As part of her field experience, she will be teaching and traveling in Senegal for two weeks. Click here to follow her adventures.

Sighting and Angle of Elevation

In seventh grade Algebra, the students used Slope-o-meter to measure the slopes of inaccessible objects with a method called sighting.

To find the slope of the roof of the building next door to Saklan, the students held out their Slope-o-meter and lined up the bottom edge with the slope of the roof. Then they sketched the slope and recorded their measurement. Thank you for another fun lesson Mr. Zippin!
