Kindergarten Fun

This week in Kindergarten we decorated gingerbread men.

Also, we have been playing the dreidel game. It is a great way to learn about how the holidays are celebrated by some, develop our math, work on our listening skills, and of course have fun!

Saklan’s Holiday Toy Drive

The Saklan Student Council is sponsoring a Holiday Toy Drive to benefit children who live in the Iron Triangle in Richmond, California. These children range in ages of 5-15. We are asking that Saklan families donate unwrapped new toys between the dates of December 5-14, 2016. Please bring these unwrapped toys to your child’s classroom. After school on December 14, the Saklan Student Council will collect all toys from each classroom and wrap them.  Gina Baker, a Saklan parent and Board Trustee, will deliver the toys to the Iron Triangle Neighborhood Council. Since we do not want to collect too many toys for one age group, we are asking the following:

Owlets and Hoot Owls: Donate new unwrapped toys for children ages 4-5

Kindergarten-Fifth grade: Donate new unwrapped toys for children ages 6-11

Sixth-Eighth Grade: Donate new unwrapped toys for teens ages 12-15

Thank you in advance for being generous and helping to provide a wonderful holiday experience for a few children!

Duck For President

Kindergartners read a book called Duck For President. After they discussed the story, they explored the idea of voting for candidates and what an election means.

Later, they compounded their learning by voting for Oreos or Chocolate Chip cookies. Oreos won by a landslide.:-) They took this further in their math by creating tallies and charts with their voting data.

Kindergarten Celebrates Diwali

Last Friday the Kindergarteners and Hoot Owls enjoyed a presentation on the Hindu celebration of Diwali. One of our Kindergarten parents, Abhinav Chandra came to school. He and his daughter Naryani dressed in traditional Hindu celebration dress; they showed us a video of how Diwali is celebrated and told us the story of Diwali.

Diwali or Festival of Lights is one of the biggest festivals in India. It is a Hindu festival to celebrate the return of victorious Lord Ram to his capital city Ayodhya after he defeated the demon king Ravan. Hindus celebrate Diwali by lighting their houses with decorative lights, inviting friends and family for a festive meal, exchanging sweets, and above all, bursting fire-crackers.

Later kindergarteners were lucky to try a taste of some traditional Hindu sweets that are eaten during Diwali.
