This week, we celebrated Earth Day with a series of activities at school that involved our Family Groups. The program included a presentation by Classroom Safari – an educational and entertaining adventure into the wild. The animal ambassadors shared interesting facts about the animals diets, enemies, and special adaptations that help them survive. The students were excited about learning conservation and seeing animals from around the world. After the presentation, the students in Family Groups discussed what the idea of Responsibility has to do with animals and Earth Day.
Earth Day was organized by our wonderful Science Teacher, Vickie Obenchain, and supports our program of environmental education to make Saklan students aware of the issues that are confronting our planet.
After lunch, the Japanese exchange students spent time with the Kindergarten and first grade classes, making origami and playing. “This was the best day of the year!” said one enthusiastic first grader at the end of the day!
Hopefully this is just the first of many global exchanges to come to Saklan!

As is the tradition every year, the Owlets, Hoot Owls and Kindergarten classes enjoyed St. Patrick’s Day celebrations last Friday. This entailed a lot of green, some sweet treats, a little magic, and lots of smiles! Those pesky leprechauns left green footprints, turned rainbow sorbet into green sorbet, and avoided those creative traps made by the Kindergarten class. There’s always next year….

There was a lot of love to spread around this week with Valentine’s Day!

On Thursday, February 8th, students in the Hoot Owls, Kindergarten and 1st grade celebrated the completion of 100 days of school so far this year! Parties, games, snacks, and activities all centered around the big number 100.
Kindergartners were asked to build an upright snowman as tall as possible using just marshmallows and toothpicks. It was great to see the evolution of their thought and creativity as they used problem solving skills to achieve success. Way to think creatively, Kindergarten!
The Kindergarten and first grade classes tapped into their expansive imaginations while looking at Rorschach inkblot tests. After discussing what they saw in the symmetry, they created their own Rorschach paintings. They were pleasantly surprised with the results every time!
Kindergartners spent the day at the Oakland Zoo celebrating the Festival of Animals that they have been learning in Music.
With each piece of music, the children had to hunt to find the corresponding animal.
Lots of fun was had by all!
On Thursday, as part of their community unit, Kindergartners went to Fire Station 41 to meet with the firefighters. They showed the students how they live and the many ways they help them in the community.
