Congratulations, Class of 2024!

On Thursday morning, we honored and celebrated The Saklan School’s Graduating Class of 2024. It was a heartfelt ceremony in which the middle school teachers introduced the graduates and the graduates shared short speeches with their parents, teachers and fellow students.

A highlight of the ceremony was a speech by Saklan Alumni, Jacob Martin. Jacob graduated from Saklan in 2014 and has since completed high school, graduated from college and started his first “real job” as a paralegal. The wisdom that Jacob shared with the graduates was inspiring! Equally heart warming was Grace Chaffey leading the audience in singing “In My Life” by The Beatles.

There are several people that made the graduation events possible this year. We would like to extend a special thank you to Emily Williamson, Anny Khalil and Jenny Choi for organizing the graduation dinner and gifts. It takes a lot of planning and coordination, but the dinner was beautifully orchestrated. Thank you to Christina Nguyen, Jennifer Lettieri, Kim Parks, and Vickie Obenchain for helping the students express themselves so eloquently in their graduation speeches. Additionally, a special shout-out goes to Grace Chaffey, Shay Sager, Mel Zippin, Kim Parks, and Javier Yacarini for all their behind-the-scenes work handling the logistics of the graduation dinner and ceremony.

World of Islam Symposium

The creation and spread of the religion of Islam started on the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th century, and was a major event during Medieval times. In Humanities class, the 7th graders learned about Muhammad’s life and other key events surrounding the beginnings of the Islamic religion. Jennifer taught the class about the prophet Muhammad and his importance to Islam. Next, each member of the class chose a topic to study on their own:

  • The Spread of Islam: 632 – 750 C.E. – Braden and Luke
  • The Islamic Golden Age – Cam and Jack D.
  • Islamic Beliefs – Jack Z. and Narayani
  • Islamic Art – Luca
  • Islamic Architecture – Lucas and Maya
  • Women in Islam and Islamophobia Today – AJ

During their World of Islam Independent Study unit, the 7th graders reviewed digital sources that related to the individual topics that they chose. Next, the students wrote and answered their own questions based on the information they learned from the sources. The 7th graders also shared what they were learning with one another in classroom displays and seminar-style discussions.

Finally, the students put together their own presentations to share what they learned during their World of Islam Symposium. Each student shared a short lecture, prepared an informative tri-fold display board, and designed an interactive activity to teach visitors about their topics.

During their studies, the 7th graders did their best in their speaking and writing not to make assumptions that could make people feel upset or offended. The students think that it is important to learn about Islam so that they can relate to and work well with people who follow both Islam and all other religions. Additionally, they feel it is important to learn about the history and religion of Islam to help understand stereotypes about Muslims in order to address Islamophobia today. The 7th graders shared that learning about Islam helped them understand and empathize with Muslim people.

Thank you to all of our parents, teachers, and the fourth and sixth grade students who visited the Symposium. The 7th graders enjoyed sharing their learning with you!

Beloved Music Teacher

Beloved Music Teacher Grace Chaffey Starts a New Chapter but Leaves Behind a Legacy of Kindness, Self-Love, and Fun

Written by Saklan 4th Grader, Cameron

As the years go by, many things change, but Grace Chaffey leaving Saklan is a change on a whole different level. Mrs. Chaffey has shaped our school into the courageous, curious, and caring place that it is today. For 16 years, Mrs. Chaffey taught us how to be confident in our performances but also in ourselves, always. Performing shows, concerts, and helping us stretch and explore our vocal cords, are just the few ways she enriches our learning.

Mrs. Chaffey began teaching music at Saklan in 2008. She is originally from Ohio by way of Wisconsin and has a Bachelor of Music from Butler University and Master’s in Music Education from Boston University. Prior to joining Saklan, she spent time studying and performing opera in Sydney, Australia and San Francisco. “I joined Saklan in August of 2008. My goal when I started to develop the music program was for every kid to love singing and making music.”

In the 16 years she has been at Saklan, Mrs. Chaffey created many special traditions. Some of these include the Lower and Middle School Musicals, singing “This Little Light of Mine,” the fourth graders learning ukulele, and the fifth graders learning guitar. She also started the choir, orchestra and band programs in middle School.

“My proudest accomplishments during my time at Saklan center around connecting social justice issues with music, so my students understand that music is something deeply meaningful to the world that connects us all.” Mrs. Chaffey shows us that music is more than just singing and performing, but is a sacred way to express your feelings, struggles, and culture. This is something unique about Mrs. Chaffey’s teaching.

Mrs. Chaffey is one of the most favorite teachers from generations of students because she is always so loving and kind to everyone. There have been many emotions and chatter in the hallways about the news of Mrs. Chaffey leaving.

Geetika, a 4th grader said, “I am going to miss her kindness and how she teaches. She also is very good at singing and lets us do fun musicals. I like how she isn’t frustrated when we mess up during practices.” Carson, a 4th grader that has been at Saklan since preschool, said, “I am going to miss how she was so kind and generous to everyone. My favorite part of her teaching is that she never puts too much pressure on someone.”

Mrs. Chaffey does not just impact the students but also Saklan alumni, too. For example, Ryan Lo, a current 10th grader at Head Royce, states, “The enthusiasm she brought to every class has helped foster my love for music, even to this day. I loved singing and performing then, and I still do now.”

“The thing I love most at Saklan is the community and connections between friends and students. It is certainly the thing I will miss the most. I hope Saklan students remember me as kind, and someone who challenged them to perform and think outside their comfort zones,” stated Mrs. Chaffey, as she looks back on her 16 years. Based on what the students have been saying, I would say that is definitely what we all will remember her by.

As our school year comes to an end, we will treasure our last days with Mrs. Chaffey. On a more personal note, I love that Mrs. Chaffey cares about everyone and how she spreads joy to all of us in her music with instruments and songs. Thank you, Mrs. Chaffey.

Engaging, Insightful Work

As we approach the end of the year, we would be remiss not to pause and reflect on the past two weeks. From the delightful and hilarious Middle School Musical and impressive and thought-provoking Art Show, to two PBL Culminations that showcased deep, authentic project work, our students demonstrated their creativity and courage. Their work has been engaging, insightful, and truly representative of who we are at Saklan.

Our Hoot Owls shot beyond the stars with their Space Culmination exploration of the moon, sun, Earth, our solar system, space objects, and rockets! Meanwhile, our 6th graders designed and created a Museum dedicated to exploring how we are still connected to Ancient Greek culture, language, and mythology today. Thank you to our dedicated ECE team and Linda for providing our students with the invaluable opportunity to explore these topics in such depth.

Thank you to Lauren for bringing the Art Show to life. It was a fantastic event, showcasing the creativity and hard work of all Saklan students. Lauren’s dedication to the artistic process and her support in helping students explore their creativity shone through every piece. We also appreciate the time she took to meticulously organize the art, create engaging scavenger hunts, and manage all the details that made the event a resounding success!

Thank you to Grace for directing our middle school students’ wonderful performance of Into the Woods at Town Hall Theatre in Lafayette last Friday evening. For 16 years, Grace has directed extraordinary shows at Saklan, and this last one was no exception. Her hard work, dedication, and love for the students was evident throughout the show. Her casting created magic on the stage, allowing the students to shine brightly. Inspiring middle school students to share their creativity, compassion, and courage on stage is no easy feat, but Grace does it with ease year after year. Thank you!

None of these events would be successful without the help of our community. Teachers, parents, and administration all come together to support and make each one possible. Thank you to all those (too many to mention) helping hands.

Thank you to the Saklan students for sharing their work with us; it is inspiring for all of us to witness their voices and ideas reflected in these culminating events!

With gratitude,

David

Library Books

The end of the year is approaching fast, which means students are running out of time to return library books! As we head into the last week and a half of school, please check in with your student to see if they have any library books at home. Meredith, Joy, and our newest librarian, Reva, request that all Saklan Library books be returned by next Tuesday, May 28th.

The library staff is busy sending emails detailing which books each student still has checked out. We appreciate your help in ensuring your student gets their books returned on time. Thank you!
