This week in Kindergarten we were very fortunate to be visited by Justin Kurup and his dog Mikko. We learnt about how the SPCA helps domestic animals and we also discovered we knew a lot about looking after dogs and cats!
The visit was lots of fun and included many wet kisses from Mikko.
On Tuesday, the students attended the NED Show, a high energy, motivational assembly featuring a character NED with lots of active participation.
The NED Show’s goal was to inspire students to become champions at school and in life through three critical skills: Never Give Up, Encourage Others, and Do Your Best.

Dr. Reischer earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in Psychology / Human Development, and is an honors graduate of Princeton University. A former consultant with McKinsey & Company, she sits on the advisory board for Happy Healthy Kids and continues to lead popular parenting classes at schools and organizations such as UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, Habitot Children’s Museum, and University of California.

Dear Saklan Parents,
Happy New Year! I hope you have had a restful and enjoyable time with your family and friends. After two weeks of relaxation, it is great to be back at Saklan and start 2017 with a very enjoyable Flag and hear what our Grade 8 students learned from their week-long Washington D.C. field trip. We were also fortunate that the weather was dry and sunny, something that we have not seen much of this week. Next week, it looks like we will be having more rain, so for the days, and maybe weeks ahead, please keep an eye on the weather forecasts and make sure that your children’s rain jackets, hats and rain boots are ready to go.
Community service is a very important aspect of our program at Saklan. Each year our community and students engage in a number of activities that support our local community, both through direct involvement, such as volunteering at a food bank, or indirect involvement, such as raising funds for worthy causes. Starting this month, we will be supporting an important local project, the Lamorinda All-Access Playground. This project is being sponsored by the Moraga Rotary and is supported by many local schools, clubs, organizations, and businesses. The project involves the building of an all-access playground in the Moraga Commons that will provide specialized recreational equipment to benefit children of all abilities. This is a community project that truly speaks to the Saklan mission and resonates with our educational philosophy of building an inclusive community and valuing the importance of play and movement. To this end, we will be running a series of bake and hot chocolate sales during the month of January with the proceeds being donated to the Lamorinda All-Access Playground Project. These will take place on three Friday afternoons, which are January 13, 20 and 27 from 2:00-3:30PM in the Hoot Owl room. Baked goods and hot chocolate will be only $1.00. A big thank you to the Student Council and to the many parents that are contributing with baked goods. Please support this important community project.

Last week, Kindergarten spent time with their buddies reading their incredible stories that they have worked so hard on. Later, they developed their amazing collaboration skills making gingerbread men and snowflakes.
We started the first Flag of 2017 with the middle school choir singing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.
Basketball players wanted! Fifth through eighth grades! Starting in January, The Saklan School has scheduled seven games against four other schools. We have to start preparing to host some of these games and travel a short distance for others. All interested players start playing as much as possible during recess and learning periods.

January is Good Humor Month at Saklan! Saklan’s Student Council has planned a month full of fun! We have chosen a different theme for three Wednesdays during the month. Please have your child dress in clothes that relate to the specified theme. At lunchtime each Wednesday, the Student Council officers will facilitate a cooperative activity between grades 1-8. We hope these activities encourage teamwork and build school spirit. Please refer to the list below for days, themes, and activities.
Wednesday, January 11: Sports Day
Students should wear a jersey, shirt, sweatshirt, hat, etc. of their favorite sports team. It can be a professional team, a little league team, or any type of team in between.
Activity: 3-Leg Race (4 students from each grade)
Wednesday, January 18: Crazy Hair/Clash Day
Students are encouraged to wear clothes that are outrageous and do not match. Also, students should style their hair as crazy and wild as possible. Yikes!
Activity: Freeze Dance Contest (everyone)
Wednesday, January 25: Pajama Day
This is a Saklan tradition! Students should wear their favorite pajamas and slippers to school. Remember that your pajamas have to be school appropriate!
